Actually, I have two, but I’m only going to tell you about one.
We met about 2 years ago. He happened into the same dive bar that my sister and her best friend took me to when I found out that the ex was having an affair. My sister went to high school with C. and she introduced us to each other.
Of course, having just found out that the man I was married to for 14 years was sleeping around really put me in no position to meet anyone. I was depressed, and not even close to being ready for small talk. I had no idea how to engage in small talk. I was not the most sociable woman in the bar that evening.
But he was so cute. And his eyes. Oh my god, those eyes. The most beautiful blue eyes I had ever seen. I melted. Into a still-very-bitter pool of sludge.
And he had a girlfriend.
We saw each other a couple of times over the course of a year. And he always had the same girlfriend.
Fast forward to last Friday. It’s been a year since we’ve seen each other, and he showed up at the same bar where we met. I was outside smoking when I caught a glimpse of him talking to a couple of people. I said hi and he told me he would come inside in a few minutes. I offered to buy him a beer, hoping that it would be served by the time he came in. (The pub is not known for it’s speedy service.)
So he came in, we sat at the bar and talked for 2 hours. He broke up with his girlfriend. Our hands brushed together a couple of times. He touched my shoulder when he wanted me to lean into him so he could talk without yelling over the speakers. We did a lemon-drop shot together and he offered me the lemon he was holding when my shot went down really harsh.
He said he would be back this weekend.
